Item description
Gwenlo’s mission is to ensure that those learners who might not cope well in mainstream schools are able to achieve academic success, and to provide learners with all the tools they may need to succeed in life after school. Gwenlo College CC t/a Gwenlo Tutoring Centre (“Gwenlo”) commenced business in 2004 and is a full-time high school tutoring centre in Olivedale catering for Grades 10, 11 and 12. Originally established for a handful of students by twin sisters Gwyneth Espach and Olwen Jackson, Gwenlo has grown to the point where it currently caters for 43 students – a number which is considered close to the optimum level as the school is kept deliberately small enough in order to provide focussed tuition to small, manageable classes. Gwenlo Tutoring Centre is registered with the South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) who moderate all the learners work, with the overall curriculum aligned to the requirements stipulated by the Department of Basic Education. Grade 12’s write the National Senior Certificate in November each year and are issued with a certificate by UMALUSI
What makes Gwenlo different?
•Classes are limited to no more than 15 learners at a time, allowing for a more focused and individualised education than a learner may expect in a mainstream school. Learners are also encouraged to participate in class and to interact with other learners
•Teaching is provided by a committed team of teachers, all having a passion for education and who are committed to helping students complete their schooling in a warm and nurturing atmosphere. All teachers pride themselves on being able to maintain close relationships with learners in a controlled environment.
•Gwenlo operates within a home environment where all forms of antisocial behaviour are expressly prohibited.
