Road Test Report by Freek Stegmann
2006 Suzuki GSX-1300R Hayabusa
Saturday Afternoon 9 January 2021
Departing Fairland in Randburg, with a friend of mine on his Africa Twin, we took on the traffic on Hendrik Potgieter Drive heading west to pick up the scenic Kromdraai route.
In traffic, the bike handled itself well despite the length and weight. There was no problem out accelerating the traffic from traffic lights! Overall, the bike has a comfortable stance and riding position; however, on a long trip, it would probably require a few more coffee stops than an adventure-touring bike.
Turning onto the Kromdraai road one could feel the will of the horsepower to run wild and I had to hold back with all might! What an awesome ride, when entering a corner the Busa will stick its nose in on its own and you just have to control the lean angle and speed. Encountering wind was not a problem at all due to the perfect aerodynamic streamlined design.
The acceleration and braking capabilities of the Busa is exceptional but as a “young at heart” senior citizen, I found it difficult to abide by the law with the result that the fuel consumption figures were not very impressive at ±15km/litre.
I cannot disclose publically at what speed the rev limiter kicked in in top gear, as it will assuredly get me locked away for a long time!
